Introduction and use of CoCrMo alloy

2021-12-28 15:30

CoCrMo alloy (cobalt-chromium-molybdenum) is one of the cobalt-based alloys, and it is also a kind of the so-called Stellite alloy. It is a cobalt-based alloy that is resistant to wear and corrosion. The first cobalt-based alloy was a binary cobalt-chromium alloy, which was later developed into a ternary component of cobalt-chromium-tungsten, and only later did cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys. Cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy is based on cobalt as the main component, containing a considerable amount of chromium, molybdenum and a small amount of nickel, carbon and other alloying elements, and occasionally also contains iron and other alloys. According to the different composition of the alloy, they can be made into welding wire, powder used for hard surface welding, thermal spraying, spray welding and other processes, and can also be made into castings and forgings and powder metallurgy parts.

CoNiCrMo alloy is one of the potential forging cobalt-based alloys. It was originally called MP35N. When under stress, it can have high corrosion resistance in seawater (containing chloride ions). Cold working can increase the strength of the alloy, but cold working has It is quite difficult, especially for large devices, such as hip joint stems, only hot forging is more suitable.
The wear resistance of forged CoNiCrMo alloy is similar to that of cast CoCrMo alloy. It has the advantages of good fatigue resistance and high tensile strength. Therefore, it is suitable for applications where long life is required without fracture or stress fatigue, such as hip joints. Artificial joints, this advantage is very important for the difficult and expensive operation of burying the implant deep into the femoral bone marrow duct.
